AIRBNB ON TRACK

Numbers and outcomes, they declare a lot. Recent results show that the Dutch tourism industry is doing very well. We can speak of a 6% increase with 36 million guests relative to 2013. This is great, but tourism is changing. Take Airbnb for example, there are no CBS statistics yet but the amount of subscriptions of Dutch homes has increased with 147% since January 2014.

How can it be explained that so many people have faith in this new leisure and tourism industry? I think those people have know how about the current travel desires and needs. People who understand that todays society is more about connecting, local and authentic and that these values are carried out in all aspects of our daily life, including tourism, and that giving meaning to this values will contribute to ones Quality of Life. By providing a holiday destination where connecting is key, as with Airbnb, it can improve the satisfying feeling of the Emotional Wellbeing - for both parties: for the landlord and the tenant. The social connections, being involved and contribute to the local community is of great value in an impact- and meaningful economy.

It is striking that Amsterdam is still the most popular city among tourist and for Airbnb landlords, while Rotterdam became the European City of 2015. I would say that with such a distinction the popularity as leisure city would rise quickly, and however the tourism statistics show that there's a significant rise in guests, there are a lot less Airbnb's in Rotterdam than in Amsterdam, yet... Which I think is a shame, The Netherlands has so much more to offer than just Amsterdam.
