Fast Fashion vs. Slow Fashion

Fast Fashion

Fast-fashion is a term for quick following collections that capitalize on trends in the fashion industry. These off-the-peg clothes are offered at extremely low prices which makes the step to purchase and repeatability very accessible.

Today’s youth don’t know better that everything is replaceable. They easily throw things away and that's why they live in a throwaway society. But not everything is replaceable, exhaustible resources, for instance, which are used for the production of clothing. We have one earth, one environment and we have to deal with it. One day, we all be aware that our planet runs out and that there won’t be an increasing supply anymore.

We have to stop polluting the earth, stop deplete the environment and manpower. We have to put our greediness to the side: Fast fashion should be curbed!

Slow Fashion

With slow fashion clothing the focus is on quality and high-quality products. The clothes are timeless and uses renewable materials. The frequency of new collections is much lower and the work conditions are much better. For slow fashion items you pay more so the price is fairly distributed throughout the whole supply chain.

‘’I always try to remember that the price we pay for things is connected to other people’s paycheck…’’

Some nice new slow fashion initiatives you might be interested in are Jeans School, MOAM Collective and G-Star Raw for the oceans.

The fact that slow fashion is more expensive than fast fashion is positive in humanitarian terms but that still doesn’t make sense towards the environment. Therefore, I strongly support the circular economy.

With a circular economy, there is a biological and technical cycle. Use products will be reused without any loss of quality and consumable products are biodegradable so it can be returned to the earth.

For me, it’s crystal clear: Fast Fashion needs a BRAKE and Slow Fashion needs a BOOST!
